Hospitality degree course comes to town

12 February 1998

The first hospitality management degree course offered in central Brisbane will start on February 23.

The bachelor of business program - administered, delivered and assessed by the University of Queensland - is based at the TAFE Southbank-Cotah (College of Tourism and Hospitality) campus.

About 120 students have enrolled for the three-year course which is being run by the University's Gatton College-based Hospitality, Tourism and Property Management Department.

The Faculty of Business, Economics and Law began offering Australia's first business-oriented hospitality training at Gatton 25 years ago.

The move to Southbank, where lectures will be held between 4pm and 8pm, makes this highly regarded and recognised course more accessible to people in the industry working around the central city area.

Hospitality management lecturer Paul Barron said first-year subjects included accounting, accommodation studies, food and beverage service, food and catering, information systems for managers, and principles of hospitality and tourism.

Mr Barron said there would be more electives in the second and third years but with continuing emphasis on core subjects such as marketing, accounting, hospitality issues and human resource management.
