Researchers study the effects of alcohol

13 February 1998

University of Queensland researchers are studying why some people drink moderate amounts of alcohol and others tend to overconsume.

PhD student in the School of Psychology Nicole Lee said researchers were examining the way social drinkers felt and thought when they consumed alcohol to see whether these things influenced their consumption.

'Ultimately, this will help us to understand the risk factors which point to unsafe drinking,' she said.

'It will make it easier to identify drinkers at risk of developing problems with alcohol well before some kind of intervention is needed.'

Volunteers in the study will be asked to drink a quantity of alcohol paced over a one to two-hour period and answer some questions.

Participation is entirely confidential and researchers are seeking healthy male and female volunteers, from people who drink only occasionally to those who drink every day.

People interested in participating can contact Ms Lee (telephone 3365 6831) or leave their first names and contact number on the answering machine.
