Earthquake near Brisbane

27 October 2000

A notable earthquake of approximate magnitude (Richter) 4 was recorded at The University of Qld seismograph station Brisbane, on Wednesday 25/10/00 at 03:43 PM (EST ).

It has been located 193 km offshore from Brisbane at position :
27.37 S, 154.97 E, depth 0, Origin Time 05 42 01.9 (universal time).

Senior observer at The University of Queensland's Queensland University Advanced Centre for Earthquakes Study (QUAKES) Col Lynam said: "This event would be the largest event close to Brisbane since the 1960 (Ml 4.3 ) Mt Glorious earthquake.

"Historically, two other past smaller earthquakes have also widely felt in the Brisbane suburbs or Brisbane River Valley."

One was "The Rosewood earthquake" of Magnitude 3.2 which occurred during the EXPO yearof 1988 and more recently, "the Acacia ridge earthquake" of Magnitude 2.9 in July 1996.

Col Lynam would be interested in hearing from people living near the shore line who may have heard unusual noises or felt vibrations on Wednesday October 25th after 3pm.

There is also the possibility that a small tsunami may have been generated and he will be following up that when tide gauge information is available
