Volunteers needed for sports drinks study

3 January 2001

The University of Queensland is seeking volunteers to assist in a world first study on the effectiveness of commercially available sports drinks to hydrate the body.

Researcher Rebecca Hill said it was believed that sports drinks provided an almost immediate supply of energy and in addition, benefited the athlete by hydrating the body's tissues faster than by drinking water alone.

However, currently no data were available to support this belief, she said.

Ms Hill is conducting PhD research in the Children's Nutrition Research Centre in UQ's Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Royal Children's Hospital in Brisbane.

She is seeking male and female subjects of all fitness levels, aged between 18 and 35 years, to participate in this study.

People wishing to participate, or requiring more information can contact telephone 0417 635 567 or email: rj.hill@mailbox.uq.edu.au
