Orientation 2001 launches new year for UQ Ipswich

Market stalls, music, a free barbecue and an outside broadcast from FM Radio Triple M will usher in Orientation 2001 on the UQ Ipswich campus next week [Monday, February 26 to Thursday, March 1].

About 650 new students will join students, staff and members of the Ipswich community in launching the third academic year of teaching on the dynamic modern campus.

The week's activities will include official orientations and welcomes for full-time and part-time students plus a good measure of fun. Highlights include 2001 UQI Odyssey, a free live band gig on Wednesday featuring Daisy Cutters, Love Pack and Deadly Awards winner Stiff Gins, whose members will launch their CD at the event.

Market Day from 10am-3pm on Thursday will feature stalls from 50 community groups, University services and Union stalls, mediaeval and sporting displays, food, music, performances, and a special outside broadcast and free barbecue for students courtesy Triple M Brisbane.

From 6-7pm on Thursday, the Student Union will host a barbecue for parents, partners, friends and students.
The week will culminate on Sunday with a Service to Celebrate the Commencement of the 2001 Academic Year, followed by afternoon tea.

The service, Holding Hands and Walking Feet, will feature soloist Tom Keenan and a choir of about 40 voices, and will be led by Friends of UQ Ipswich chair Dr Hugh Bartholomeusz and Fr Bill Uren SJ.

Wednesday, February 28: 2001 UQI Odyssey (Refectory Grounds)

Thursday, March 1: 10am-3pm, UQ Ipswich Market Day (Refectory Grounds)

6-7pm barbecue for parents, partners, friends, students (main marquee near Building 12)

Sunday, March 4:2.30pm, Service to Celebrate the Commencement of the 2001 Academic Year (Rooms 116 and 117)
