Workshop highlights importance of the media

A workshop highlighting the importance of the journalist in reporting politics will be held on the Gold Coast this weekend.

Making the world a safer place: a role for the media will be held on Sunday August 15 at the Crowne Plaza, Surfers Paradise.

The one day workshop is designed to bring together working Australian and foreign journalists, journalism educators, development experts and UNESCO officials.

Speakers will discuss the role of journalists in reporting global issues, improving policy-making in Canberra, placing foreign issues on the agenda, and examining foreign policy, foreign development and aid.

Speakers include United Nations specialists, publishers and academic experts from around the world.

Martin Hadlow from UNESCO-Afghanistan, and the author of Lost in Transmission and ABC South Asian correspondent, Jonathon Harley, will discuss their experiences.

The workshop is co-hosted by the Foundation for Development Cooperation (FDC) and the School of Journalism and Communication at The University of Queensland.
