Big questions challenged on World Philosophy Day

17 November 2010

Atmospheric pollution and religious rules on contraception are just some of the topics to be discussed at a World Philosophy Day oration at The University of Queensland (UQ) tomorrow (18 November).

Associate Professor William Grey, from UQ’s School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics, will deliver the talk 'What does it mean to be a Philosopher?', but says the event will also allow people to share their thoughts and to openly explore and discuss ideas.

“World Philosophy Day aims to inspire public debate on society’s challenges,” Associate Professor Grey said.

“My address concerns the challenge of ensuring a sustainable future and will explore the role of philosophy and philosophers in contemporary society.”

Established by UNESCO in 2002, World Philosophy Day it is an international event observed annually on the third Thursday of November to honor philosophical reflection around the world.

Associate Professor William Grey’s oration will be held at 12pm in Lecture Room 206, the Steele Building (Building 3) at the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus.
