A taste of wine, cheese and ancient art

The University of Queensland’s R.D. Milns Antiquities Museum will throw its doors open for Wine, Cheese and Ancient Art on 14 June.

Visitors will be able to draw and photograph two-thousand-year-old items such as a replica Hellenistic torso of the Macedonian King, a 6th Century BC Athenian pottery depicting the battle between Greek hoplites and Amazonians, and a range of Roman and Greek sculptural pieces such as the Head of Aphrodite.

Participants will also have the opportunity to create a life drawing, still life, technical drawing and an action scene.

Dr Victoria Bladen from UQ School of English, Media Studies and Art History, will give a keynote presentation covering the artistic and literature-based influences of the Ancient World.

Museum Director Dr Janette McWilliam said the event would kick off a series of community events that focus on the legacy of the Ancient World.

“We are excited to offer a new level of intimacy between our collection of Mediterranean Antiquities and the Brisbane community” Dr McWilliam said.
