University of Queensland alumna and Court of Appeal Justice Catherine Holmes has been appointed Queensland’s 19th Chief Justice.

Justice Holmes is the first woman to be appointed to the role.

Queensland Premier and fellow UQ alumna Annastacia Palaszczuk said Justice Holmes was an outstanding choice for the position.

“Justice Holmes is a terrific legal mind who has extensive experience as a judge across the criminal, civil and appellate jurisdictions,” she said.

“I am confident she will bring stability, integrity and provide vital leadership during her tenure as the next Chief Justice of Queensland.”

Justice Holmes graduated from UQ with a Bachelor of Laws in 1980, a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in 1989 and a Master of Laws (Adv) in 1998.

UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said the University was proud to have contributed to the development of another leader who was creating change in the community.

“I'm delighted that another distinguished Law graduate has been recognised by the community and the legal profession by this appointment,” he said.

“UQ has about 220,000 graduates, including 11,500 PhDs, who have applied their UQ advantage to enhance society, the environment and economies in more than 150 countries.

“This network is one of UQ’s greatest assets.”

Justice Homes is the 12th UQ graduate to serve as Queensland’s Chief Justice.
