Australia’s newest ambassador to Cambodia is none other than University of Queensland alumnus Angela Corcoran.

The Bachelor of Economics (Honours) graduate and former Assistant Secretary of the Indonesia Political and Economic Strategy Branch at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was appointed last month.

As ambassador, Ms Corcoran will work closely with Cambodian representatives to strengthen the relationship between Australia and Cambodia.

A UQ spokesperson said her appointment showcased the quality of UQ’s alumni.

“UQ alumni have a strong track record of creating change globally and this is epitomised by Ms Corcoran’s career success."

“Ms Corcoran graduated with honours from our School of Economics and has enjoyed a long and successful career in foreign affairs.

“We wish her every success in her new role.”

Ms Corcoran’s diverse portfolio will include Cambodian-Australian trade, Australian investment in the Cambodian education, tourism and banking sectors, and the use of Australian foreign aid to improve agricultural productivity, healthcare and access to infrastructure in Cambodia.

She will also support the Federal Government’s Australia Awards and New Colombo Plan scholarship programs to encourage the exchange of ideas between Cambodian and Australian students.

Ms Corcoran graduated from UQ in 1988 and went on to earn her Master of Economics from the University of New England.

In the years following, she took on leadership roles at UniQuest and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

In addition to her latest role at DFAT, Ms Corcoran served as the Assistant Secretary of the Indonesia and Timor-Leste Program Delivery Branch, and the Acting First Assistant Secretary of the East Asia Development Division.
