UQ research teams awarded $25 million in ARC Discovery Projects scheme

28 November 2022

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has announced $25 million funding for 51 University of Queensland research teams to support a diverse range of fundamental research projects.

The flagship ARC Discovery Project scheme supports projects to expand the knowledge base and research capacity in Australia, and deliver economic, commercial, environmental, social and cultural benefits.

UQ was awarded the second highest number of grants and total funding from the national scheme in the 2023 round.

The 51 approved applications represent a diverse range of fields across UQ's faculties and institutes.

Recipients include Professor Sandie Degnan and Professor Bernard Degnan for a project studying the origin and evolution of symbiosis between animals and bacteria.

Associate Professor Gary Osmond, Professor Murray Phillips and Mr Alistair Harvey will examine sport, culture and identity in Torres Strait Islander History.

In psychology, Professor Paul Dux and Dr Hannah Filmer will assess neurochemical predictors of cognition and the impact of brain stimulation.

A full list of successful projects is available on the ARC website.
