UQ honours global leaders in July graduations

Former Australian chief scientist, physicist Dr Catherine Foley AO PSM, is joined by world-renowned geneticist Emeritus Professor Sir Peter Donnelly and education advocate and international funds manager Matthew McLennan in being awarded Honorary Doctorates.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry AC said the UQ community is delighted to honour these global leaders.

“Honouring these outstanding individuals who have dedicated their careers to improving the lives of others, whether that be through physics, genomics or advocating for education is of great importance to our University,” Professor Terry said.

“Dr Foley, Sir Peter and Mr McLennan have each made significant and unique contributions to communities across the world, including here in Queensland, and we recognise and celebrate their achievements.”

Dr Catherine Foley AO PSM

Dr Foley is a respected figure in Australia’s scientific landscape and a globally acclaimed physicist, dedicated to making knowledge and discovery accessible to all.

Her pioneering research has led to major discoveries, including her contributions to advancements in LED lighting while completing her PhD at Macquarie University.

She also developed the LANDTEM sensor system, used to locate valuable mineral deposits deep underground, while at the CSIRO.

As Australia’s 9th Chief Scientist, she strengthened the council that advises the government on science and led the development of the country’s first National Quantum Strategy.

Emeritus Professor Sir Peter Donnelly

Professor Sir Peter Donnelly is a geneticist and statistician whose research has deepened our understanding of human genetics and helped shape modern biomedical science.

Sir Peter completed a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours at UQ, graduating with the University Medal in 1980. In that same year, he was awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University, where he completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics.

Sir Peter has made significant discoveries in genetic tracing and modelling, laying the foundations for most modern genetic studies.

This includes his groundbreaking International HapMap Project, which identified the genetic variants responsible for specific aspects of health and disease.

His company Genomics Limited translates academic research into clinical applications for drug discovery and disease prevention.

Mr Matthew McLennan

Mr McLennan is a successful global funds manager, philanthropist and strong supporter of education. He currently serves as co-Head of First Eagle Investments’ Global Value Team responsible for managing USD$109.5 billion.

Mr McLennan graduated from UQ in 1991 with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) and the University Medal before returning to complete a Master of International Commercial Law from UQ in 2017. He is determined to provide the same opportunities to future generations.

Mr McLennan played a key role in the success of UQ’s Not if, When campaign through his leadership, advocacy and generous personal support. As a long-standing board member of The University of Queensland in America (TUQIA), he has also helped secure funding for a range of important education and research initiatives.
