UQ and Bundaberg Regional Council to collaborate on sustainable development

The University of Queensland and Bundaberg Regional Council have signed an agreement to collaborate on projects to support sustainable development in the region and explore research, teaching and learning opportunities.

The agreement will allow the organisations to use their respective expertise to work together on areas including health, marine and environmental science, bioscience, engineering, agriculture and ecotourism.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry AO said the agreement would further develop the University’s longstanding links with the region.  

“This collaboration will provide important insights into opportunities and challenges in the Bundaberg region as we continue to explore ways UQ can offer support,” Professor Terry said.

“As a world top 50 university, UQ works with a range of partners to contribute to communities, both locally and globally, through our research, teaching and learning.

“We’ll also continue to support the local workforce by providing regional placement opportunities and training pathways, such as at the UQ Rural Clinical Unit in Bundaberg where medical students have been undertaking placements for almost 20 years.”

Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor, Jack Dempsey said he hoped the agreement would add value to key industry sectors in the region.  

“We share a collective commitment to the health and wellbeing of our community and our environment,” Mr Dempsey said.

“This agreement will help us explore even more opportunities to collaborate on projects to protect our region’s rich marine life, promote the health and wellbeing of our residents, evaluate our infrastructure and build our reputation as an ecotourism destination.”

“I look forward to the opportunities this agreement and partnership with The University of Queensland will bring.”
