ARC supports UQ mid-career researchers
University of Queensland researchers have been awarded more than $1.9 million through the Australian Research Council (ARC) Mid-Career Industry Fellowships scheme to collaborate with industry on agriculture and health research and build translation and commercialisation skills.
Dr Li Li and Associate Professor Phong Thai will lead separate projects with industry partners to develop agricultural waste products, and strengthen understanding of illicit vaping and tobacco use in Australia.
Dr Li will collaborate with Kenon Corporation to transform agricultural waste into high-quality soil products for mushroom cultivation and crop growth.
The project will advance local production of agricultural products, while fostering a circular economy and promoting environmental sustainability.
Dr Thai will collaborate with Queensland Health, the Australian Taxation Office and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission to establish an approach using wastewater to monitor the prevalence of illicit vaping and tobacco use in Australia.
The project will strengthen understanding of the impact of tobacco control and tax policies, to develop interventions and support healthier communities.
Dr Li and Dr Thai are among 25 Australian mid-career researchers to secure a share of $25.7 million from the ARC Mid-Career Industry Fellowships scheme.
