NHMRC funding aims to improve patient outcomes
University of Queensland researchers have received more than $2.6 million through the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Partnership Projects scheme to inform health policy and improve patient outcomes.
Associate Professor Aideen McInerney-Leo from the Frazer Institute and Professor Ruth Hubbard from the Centre for Health Services Research will collaborate with partner organisations on their projects.
Dr McInerney-Leo will lead the development of a targeted melanoma screening criteria using data collected through the Australian Cancer Research Foundation.
The criteria will help improve early detection of melanoma in individuals with a higher genetic risk of skin cancer to reduce the burden of the disease on individuals and the health system.
Professor Hubbard will lead the development of a digital frailty index to improve individualised care for vulnerable patients who are at risk of poor health outcomes and longer hospital stays.
The research will help quantify and assess frailty prevalence and enable practitioners to make informed decisions about treatment and care options.
Collaboration with Queensland Health, Council on the Ageing Queensland, and the Independent Health and Aged Care Pricing Authority will integrate the frailty index into current hospital systems.
