UQ researcher secures funding to improve outcomes for young people with food allergies

30 May 2024

A University of Queensland researcher has been awarded almost $1.2 million from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to improve treatment options for teenagers with food allergies who are at the highest risk of life-threatening reactions.

Associate Professor Jennifer Koplin, along with Associate Professor Jane Peake from Queensland Children’s Hospital, will lead a research team working with adolescents and their families to better understand, and help manage, the impacts of food allergies.

This study aims to test young people’s food tolerances to see if their childhood food allergies have resolved and if not, to ensure they have strategies to manage their allergy with confidence into adulthood.

The team includes experts from UQ, Children’s Health Queensland, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Perth Children’s Hospital, QUT and the University of Melbourne.

This study is funded under the NHMRC Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Grant scheme which supports research to address important gaps in knowledge, leading to relevant and implementable findings for the benefit of human health.
