Vale Dr Graham Francis de Gruchy (1924-2025)

The University of Queensland community is saddened by the passing of former UQ academic leader, Dr Graham Francis de Gruchy.

Dr De Gruchy was a leader in the field of architecture at UQ from the early 1960s through to the late 1980s, ultimately serving as Dean of the Faculty of Architecture from 1981 to 1989.

Dr De Gruchy was highly influential on the topic of Brisbane architecture and urban design, with publications including the highly regarded Architecture in Brisbane.

With an appreciation of modern art, he and his wife Joy were co-sponsors of the Darnell-De Gruchy Art Prize from 1969 – 1977 which helped to build the UQ Art Museum collection. In 2017, Dr de Gruchy received a Fellowship of the Australian Institute of Architects.

Dr De Gruchy’s leaves behind a remarkable legacy and the UQ community would like to share our condolences with Dr De Gruchy’s family and friends.
