Acute musculoskeletal pain management guidelines available for comment

23 December 2002

Healthcare professionals and consumers are invited to comment on draft guidelines for the management of acute musculoskeletal pain.

Acute Musculoskeletal Pain: Evidence-Based Management is the result of a multidisciplinary review of the scientific literature. The aim is to promote partnership between clinicians and consumers to manage pain and reduce disability.

The project is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing. Project leader, The University of Queensland’s Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor Peter Brooks is coordinator of the Australian National Action Network of the Bone and Joint Decade.

‘The goal of the project is to produce a resource that would inform practice in this area for the range of clinicians working with acute musculoskeletal pain, as well as offering a separate consumer information document to promote partnership in decision-making’, Prof Brooks said.

The document focuses on treatment of pain in five areas:
• Lower back
• Neck
• Thoracic spine
• Knee
• Shoulder

The document can be viewed and comments made online at www.uq.edu.au/health/msp.

The period for comment is 21 December 2002 to 20 January 2003.
