Wimbledon spirit finds its way to Brisbane
The spirit of the showpiece event of world tennis will come alive half a world away when Brisbane hosts its own Wimbledon Festival on Sunday 6 July.
The second annual Wimbledon Festival will coincide with the finals of the sport's most acclaimed tournament in a day of celebrations at the University of Queensland Tennis Centre.
Free tennis coaching, interactive displays and activities, band entertainment and a traditional English menu will be some of the activities on offer throughout the day-long Festival.
UQ Tennis Centre Manager Troy McGrath said the Wimbledon Festival is a friendly action packed day that has proved popular within the Brisbane community.
"For many of us the spirit of Wimbledon is something you only hear about or watch on television," Mr McGrath said.
"Brisbane's own Wimbledon Festival tries to capture that spirit and let the community experience the tennis, food and entertainment that make Wimbledon such a unique event.
"We encourage everyone to share in the atmosphere of Festival and come along and get involved in the wide range of free activities."
During the day festival goers can get involved in free coaching sessions and popular activities including fastest serve competitions, mini tennis, beat the ball machine and dive volley interactive. Strawberries and cream and a mock Wimbledon final will add to the Festival flair.
Almost $2000 in prizes will also be given away during the Festival. The day's festivities will run from 10am to 3pm at the UQ Tennis Centre (Blair Dr, St Lucia).
