Leigh swaps brawn for brains

19 September 2003

Brisbane Lions Coach Leigh Matthews has switched his focus from brawn to brains in his role as Co-Chair of The University of Queensland’s Brain Disease Challenge.

The Challenge aims to raise funds for much-needed research into brain and nervous system diseases including Alzheimer’s, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis and Stroke.

“It`s all about teamwork. The community needs to support researchers because the Government doesn’t have the funds. People have to be motivated to take a bit of personal responsibility for their health,” Mr Matthews said.

“I got involved because I’m worried about Alzheimer’s. The figures are pretty frightening, but I think we can win this one.”

As part of the Challenge, a giant lunchtime quiz, the Corporate Brain Tease, will be held on Wednesday, October 8, in the UQ Centre.

At least 200 teams from the corporate sector are needed for event to be listed in the Guinness Book of Records. If listed, the winning team will also be published in this renowned, international publication.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation of $500 to register your team or for more details about the Corporate Brain Tease, please contact the Director, UQ Development Office, Margaret Burke (telephone 07 3346 3902, email margaret.burke@uq.edu.au).
