The University of Queensland has jumped three places to 42nd in the world and third in Australia in the 2019 US News Best Global Universities assessment of the world’s top universities.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Høj said the result was testament to The University’s commitment to world-class endeavours.

“To be ranked 42nd out of the world’s best-performing 1,250 universities in more than 75 countries is a fantastic achievement,” he said.

“In the past five years UQ has collaborated with 175 US institutions on more than 330 research projects, and we currently have close to 900 American students enrolled.

“It is gratifying to again have UQ recognised internationally in the influential US ranking, and to be confirmed as one of the nation’s top three universities.”

The Best Global Universities ranking also highlights UQ’s improving performance in some academic subject areas.

Professor Høj said it was particularly pleasing to see strong rankings across an abundance of subjects offered at UQ.

“In particular, to have our Environment and Ecology subjects rated in the top ten in the world is an endorsement of UQ’s focus on delivering significant solutions to the challenges facing the world.”

“This result follows the University’s strong performance in other respected rankings such as the ShanghaiRanking released in July, where UQ was the only Australian university to achieve a number-one spot – for Mining and Mineral Engineering.”

Earlier this year, UQ placed fifth in the Asia Pacific and second in Australia in the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities.
